Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallow (FEES)
The fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing study is a well-established technique that involves passing a flexible endoscope through the patient’s nasal passage to provide a superior view of the pharynx so the larynx, pharynx, and upper esophageal opening are viewed directly from above.
The Patheous Health Approach
Our trained FEES clinician is also a speech-language pathologist (SLP) who will start by completing a thorough chart review, clinical swallow assessment, and patient interview. They will provide onsite imaging using a gold-standard fiberoptic endoscopic system at the patient’s bedside. During our FEES exam, patients are kept comfortable while our SLP evaluates the patient’s swallow function.
FEES Study Benefits
- Performed at the patient’s location in their natural eating positions.
- Safe for patients who are medically complex or fragile.
- Can be completed with patients who are tracheostomized or ventilator-dependent.
- No time-limits, therefore can examine the impact of fatigue on swallow function.
- Uses real food items we supply, in addition to any other items from the facility.
- Patient caregivers are welcome to be present for the study.
